JOIN THE NEW YORK STATE BEACH CLEANUP
SEPTEMBER 16, 2006
Join Lou Siegel and his South Shore Estuary Reserve Clean-up
Group at TOBAY Beach
Sept. 16th from 10:00 to 1:00
Every third weekend in September over 10,000 New York
volunteers gather on beaches,
lakeshores, and riversides to participate in the International Coastal
Cleanup (ICC),
sponsored and coordinated in New York by the American Littoral Society. In
one day of
cleaning, dedicated volunteers remove tons of litter and ugly and
harmful marine debris,
leaving in their wake the start of a legacy of cleaner coasts and
shorelines. Debris removed
ranges from bottles and plastic bags to cigarette butts, electronics,
abandoned automobiles,
boats, and fishing gear that can pollute our waterways, clog streams or even
kill marine animals.
This September marks the 21st consecutive year the ICC has
brought to the world's attention
the chronic problem of marine debris. We hope to focus to not just
cleaning damage already
done, but to change the behaviors that cause the problem in the first place.
To find a beach that is close to you, visit the American
Littoral Society's website:
http://www.alsnyc.org/.
A call to the site leader listed will tell you how you can help and where
and when to meet. If you would like to be a site leader at the
shoreline convenient to you that
is not listed, please contact Barbara Cohen, NYS Beach Cleanup Coordinator,
at
718-471-2166 or send an email to alsbeach@aol.com

These hands-on workshops teach how to design and build working ROVs.
Please pass this flyer on to anyone you think might be interested. If

Beyond the
Outer Shores-Eric Enno Tamm

This is the first book by a native of Ucluelet, British Columbia
who tracked the epic voyage of Ed Ricketts to the outer shores
of Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands. It is in turn
eye-opening, humorous, and deeply moving. Anyone who misses
this book misses a important piece of marine science history. Tamm
drags us deeper into the relationship between Ed Ricketts,
John Steinbeck, Jack Calvin, and Joseph Campbell in the 1920s,
'30s. and '40s. The danger is that you will finish the book resolved
to read or re-read the following:
Ricketts and Calvin- Between Pacific Tides
Steinbeck- Cannery Row
Steinbeck- Grapes of Wrath
Steinbeck and Ricketts- Log from the Sea of Cortez
Campbell- The Hero with a Thousand Faces

We are sorry to report that one of NYSMEA's original board members, Bunny
Nadelman died recently. Bunny was a pioneer in environmental education
in New York City. She set up one of the first centers for elementary
students.
She was an active member always giving great presentations at our
Conference. One of her favorites was to demonstrate Gyotaki (Japanese
fish printing,) using fish, octopus and other marine creatures. Her
family would welcome any photos or recollections from members who knew
Bunny. Please forward to:
