May and June are the months to observe and study the ancient rites of the horse shoe crab.
Here are a variety of activities.

Join The Long Island Horseshoe Crab network and report crab sightings.

If you want to really get involved and devote several nights to science research:

Volunteers Needed for Horseshoe Crab Spawning Surveys
On Long Island Beaches and Jamaica Bay
Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Marine Program is seeking volunteers to participate in horseshoe crab spawning surveys throughout Long Island. Volunteers will spend an evening (or more) working with a site coordinator to count spawning horseshoe crabs around the full & new moon high tides in May and June. The data collected will ultimately be used to track the abundance of spawning horseshoe crabs on Long Island, and to develop a horseshoe crab management plan for New York State.
Sampling will occur on evenings between: May 6-11, May 21-27, June 4-7, and June 19-24, at the following Long Island beaches:
 1) Huntington (West Neck Beach)
2) Stony Brook (Flax Pond)
3) Islip/Babylon (Captree State Park near Robert Moses Bridge)
4) Shinnecock/Tiana (West of Ponquogue Bridge)
5) Jamaica Bay (Gateway National Park)
6) Southold (Goose Creek).
If you are interested in participating and available on one (or more) of the following evenings, please contact: Dr. Matthew Sclafani (631) 854-5544, Ext 26 (email: ms332@cornell.edu).

Here are more details - just so that you get a good idea of what is required

For a walk join NYSMEA member, Alan Ascher
As you may know, the program committee of EEAC has planned a Beach Walk led by Alan Ascher for Wednesday, May 25 from 4-6:30PM at Plum Beach to observe the annual horseshoe crab mating.  After, some people will be going to Nick's restaurant for supper.  Regina McCarthy is coordinating this event and would like you to email her at jamaicabay@aol.com if you plan to go to the walk and/or the restaurant so she can make arrangements.  In anticipation of this event, another interesting and informative evening is planned in beautiful Stuyvesant Cove Park (see below).  We hope you can come to both events.

For a great Lecture Join, NYSMEA member, Dr. John Tanacredi
The Stuyvesant Cove Park Association, Inc. and the CEC Stuyvesant Cove Inc. invite you to the sixth program in the Sandi Simmons Ecology Series.  On Thursday, May 19 at 7PM, Dr. John Tanacredi, the Chair of the Dowling College Department of Earth and Marine Science, will present an illustrated lecture on the American Horseshoe Crab.  This fascinating living fossil, over 300 million years in the making, has blue blood.  Come find out why this blood is extremely important to the pharmaceutical industry, which after harvesting it returns the crab to the ocean apparently unharmed.  What is it about the horseshoe crab (which is not really a crab) that has enabled it to survive so long?  Why is the survival of the horseshoe crab so important to migrating shore birds?  What practice is endangering its survival and what is being done to protect it?
The program will take place in Solar 1 located along the banks of the East River just south of the 23rd Street Gulf gas station in Stuyvesant Cove Park.  Refreshments of wine and cheese will be served.  Suggested donation is $5 which goes toward the park.
The M23 crosstown bus meets all the subways and stops across from Solar 1 at the FDR Drive and East 23rd Street.  For more information call 212-673-7507 or 212-505-6050.

Do you have non-English speaking students in your classes? you may want to go to one of these references from NMEA: Here are Spanish, French and German translations to marine organisms, actions and habitats, provided by Karin Wagner of the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Graham Charles of the Marine Mammal Center found the Guía de campo del Acuario, also from the Monterey Bay Aquarium, to be very helpful. Gene Williamson mentioned that MBA might also have Spanish language flash cards of marine organisms.

Katia Sowers of the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve in Charleston, Oregon, suggested a childrens book “El Mundo Marino” by Francesca Baines (http://www.isbn.nu/0915741881).

Claire Johnson of the NOAA National Marine Sanctuary Program forwarded very nice photo identification sheets of Pacific Coast species of plants and animals in Latin, English and Spanish. It is too large to post, but you can request a digital copy at: Claire.Johnson@noaa.gov

A number of folks suggested: http://babel.altavista.com/

Another popular reference was the Dictionary of Oceanography and Marine Biology: http://castilla1492.freeyellow.com/ocean.html

Seminars on Science, the award-winning online professional development program from the American Museum of Natural History, is offering two courses in Earth Science this summer.
The following Ocean Science courses will run from June 27 to August 6:
The Ocean System – Integrated Science (a new course) investigates the ocean, from its origin and evolution to its incredible diversity of life and ecosystems. During the six weeks of the course, you will explore many of the same questions that oceanographers study today and examine the effects of human activities and consumption on the ocean system.
The Diversity of Fishes – Classification, Anatomy and Morphology. What is a fish? This course examines how ichthyologists pursue the evidence through the study of evolution, ecosystems, and biogeography.
Sharks and Rays – Ecology, Classification and Evolution. Explore the fossil record and the diversity of sharks and rays to learn about how they're related and the extraordinary sensory and reproductive features they share.
The coursework is designed for busy teachers, so you can complete the weekly activities at your convenience. All you need is Web access. Our Fishes and Sharks courses are available for up to 4 graduate credits from City University of New York, Adams State College, and Plymouth State University; our Ocean System course, a new course, is currently available for credit from Adams and Plymouth.
