The
"Deep Water Macroalgal Meadows 2004" expedition is now online on
NOAA's Ocean Explorer website.
This exploration studied deepwater meadows of the calcified green alga
Udotea sp. in the waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands. The
invasive
green alga Avrainvillea amadelpha was discovered by expedition
scientists for the first time in deep water off south Oahu. Over 30%
of
macroalgal species collected during this mission were new records for
Hawaii or new to science.
The "Deep Water Macroalgal Meadows 2004" website includes an
essay about
the Teacher at Sea experience, a mission summary, an essay on algal
meadows in Hawaii, and three major slideshows filled with beautifully
sharp photos from the expedition. You can find it all at:

** New Curriculum on Remote Sensing and Coral Reefs Now
Available Online **
NOAA is pleased to announce the availability of a new curriculum unit on
remote sensing and its
application to monitoring coral reefs. This set of 7 lesson plans was
designed for advanced fourth
through sixth grade students, but is also appropriate for many middle
school classrooms. Although
the curriculum was designed to be taught in sequence, many of the lessons
can stand alone as
individual classroom activities.
Topics include:
* Remote Sensing and the Electromagnetic Spectrum
* Altimetry
* Phytoplankton and Ocean Color
* Introduction to Coral Reefs
* Symbiosis and Coral Anatomy
* Sea Surface Temperature and Coral Bleaching
* Coral Reef Conservation
The unit was first presented at the national Satellites and Education
Conference in 2004. Now, the
curriculum is available for a national audience. NOAA Coral Reef Watch has
made PDF versions of the
lessons and associated materials available on its website at
http://coralreefwatch.noaa.gov/satellite/education/reef_remote_sensing.html.
Users may choose a zipfile
of the entire curriculum, or PDFs of individual lessons.

Greetings from the Institute of International Education!
We are pleased
to announce that Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. has launched a NEW,
fully funded professional development program for secondary school
teachers in the legendary Galapagos Islands.
This is a special chance for educators to visit these remote islands;
the inspiration for Darwin and home to a unique ecosystem found no where
else on Earth!
This year, the program is open to twenty secondary school classroom
teachers, of all disciplines, who teach full time in Arizona,
California, D.C., Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, New Mexico,
New York, and Texas.
The program is online at www.iie.org/programs/toyota. You can use
this
site to find out complete details, get a timeline, and access the
official application.
The deadline for application is April 21, 2006; is quickly approaching,
so your help in spreading the word will be greatly appreciated. We
have
inserted a brief program description below which we hope you will share
with your members.
Please send us an email if you know of any additional ways that would
more effectively help us reach out to teachers in Arizona and the
Arizona Association for Environmental Education; be it websites,
listservs or newsletters. We would also be happy to provide
brochures,
posters or fliers about the program to help in further outreach.
Thank you for considering this request to help publicize this Toyota
professional development opportunity among your members. If you have any
questions or would like more information, please do not hesitate to
contact me by email at toyotateach@iie.org or by phone at (toll-free)

Hopefully, through this program, the Galapagos can continue to inspire
new generations of explorers to broaden their understanding of the world
and people around them.
