ERM Foundation
 to fund the
South Shore Estuary learning Facilitator (sSELF)Program

We are happy to report that NYSMEA has again received the South Shore Estuary Learning Facilitator (sSELF) grant from the ERM Foundation for calendar year 2009. The program, run in cooperation with the South Shore Estuary Reserve Office, is designed to train students and community members to do basic testing of various environmental parameters on a regular basis.

We are also working with the Long Island Chapter of Sierra Club to
set up a local Water Sentinels Program

Contact Lou at LouSea@aol.com for further information or if your group is interested in the program

NYSMEA March Enrichment Meeting For Members

Friday March 27th

At the BOCES Summer Cottage at CAUMSETT STATE PARK

7:00 PM

SWIMMING WITH SHARKS
ON THE FIRST FULL MOON IN SPRING

Presented by Suzanne and Glenn Rankin

Arrive in daylight and enjoy the drive past water and marsh views, and through the old Marshall Field estate grounds to the cottage

Bill Monahan, Director will be there for anyone arriving before 7 to catch more light

7:00 arrival with surprise appetizer, dessert and coffee/tea.  Approx. 7:30 Progam begins

From the smallest plankton grow the largest fish in the sea, the 40’ whale sharks. You will be treated to practically being in the videos beside these magnificent docile behemoths as they graze and filter feed on the microscopic organisms, but not on Glenn and Suzanne swimming beside them. The hammerheads are not so friendly. Here, on Long Island, as the first full moon of spring approaches, we will be transported to a special little reef in Belize. The whale sharks return on their yearly migration to feed on mutton snapper spawn. As a special treat, microscopes will be available to view similar tiny critters in a live LI waters plankton tow. Try then to imagine how many gulps of microscopic organisms it takes to grow a 40 foot whale shark.  Go to  www.skimmeroutdoors.com/underwater to view their LI still shots & shipwrecks,

Our speakers are familiar from previous exciting videos of their dive trips. Both long time in the Bethpage Schools, Suzanne with Marine Biology and the AP Bio courses, and Glenn teaching band and orchestra (retiring in June).  Glenn’s beautifully composed and played music forms the background of their videos. Suzie received her MA degree at Post College in Hugo’s department. Glenn was a Navy Scuba Diver and SONAR man on nuclear submarines. Members of Marine Association and NY State Marine Educators, they have been invited several times to present their videos at the annual DIVE show at Hofstra & at NYSMEA conferences.

Volunteers Needed

The Nassau County Soil & Water Conservation District is now in charge of implementing the GeesePeace Program in a large number of Nassau County Parks, through an agreement with Nassau County DPW, (there are 10 on the South Shore).  We are only a two (2) person office. We need the help and cooperation of many volunteers to accomplish this task.  We will organize and coordinate this program, put on the trainings and we will hold one somewhere on the South Shore. We can take care of some of the parks, but we do not have the (wo)/man hours with all that we are involved with right now to do all of the parks all over the county that we must oversee.
We need volunteers to do egg oiling in teams of two. If some volunteers are willing to do more than one park, all the better. The teams have to go once or twice to each park.  It all has to be done within the next few weeks; egg laying season.
Thank you for any assistance you can offer in this joint effort to clean up our water bodies.

Last week the cyclone Hamish left the north eastern seaboard of Australia with a bang quite literally. The ship, Pacific Adventurer, ran into trouble and lost 31 containers off its deck. Resulting damage to the ship created a major oil spill affecting Morton Island, Bribie Island and the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. I thought that some of you may find the following Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) online activity 'Oil and Water don't mix' of interest and for us at least, very topical. Please find this student activity at

This month, Rutgers University scientists and students will send an underwater robotic glider on a mission to cross the Atlantic Ocean. We invite classrooms around the country to participate in this exciting adventure.

The 3,300 mile voyage will take at least six months for the slow-moving low-energy glider to cross the Atlantic. The ocean is a harsh environment and the glider will encounter many challenges on its journey. But if it is successful, it will mark a new era of oceanography providing scientists with a new tool to monitor the Earth's ocean and climate. Never before has an underwater robot successfully traveled an ocean all on its own.

Classrooms are encouraged to send us a a message to send to Europe in the glider, just like a "message in a bottle." We will post submitted classroom letters on the mission web site, and we also invite you to include a picture of your class with their letter. If the glider reaches Europe, we will send postmarked letters back to your class.

In composing your letter, your class might consider the following questions:
  • Do you think that the glider will make it?
  • Who were the other adventurers who crossed the Atlantic?
  • What do you think the glider will encounter on its journey?
  • What do students know about the ocean?
Please go to the following site to submit your letter:
http://rucool.marine.rutgers.edu/atlantic/bottle/

To follow the glider on its journey, please check out our Atlantic Crossing mission site, where you can read the latest blog posts from the student pilots, check out the latest underwater data from the glider and learn about about the kinds of ocean critters the Glider may encounter on its journey.  You'll also find a lesson plan on site in the "Get Involved" section.  You can even subscribe to the Glider's Twitter feed or befriend it on Facebook.
http://rucool.marine.rutgers.edu/atlantic/

Note: Letters submitted by March 29th will be sent inside the Glider on a thumb drive. Because the glider will be launched in early April, letters sent after March 29th may or may not make it into the glider, but they will be included on the Atlantic Crossing web site and will receive a response if the glider is successful.
